Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides negatively affect the soil food web. They are toxic, cause an impact to the whole system so that it completely changes the environment and the ability of the soil to support life. Once the bacteria, fungi, nematodes and protozoa are killed off, other members of the soil food web start to disappear as well. Earthworms that are an integral support to healthy soil cannot survive in the toxic environment, they simply move on or die off.
